reaction technology OptiMix®, a patented new reactor design from De Dietrich Process Systems, modernizes processes with an innovative baffle system that enables easier cleaning and optimizes mixing in glass-lined reactors.

OptiMix

Since its introduction to the market in 2003, OptiMix has raised the bar for glass-lined steel reactor performance and efficiency, a fact that more and more companies are finding out for themselves. So what exactly makes OptiMix better than conventional reactors? The wall-mounted baffles offer a number of advantages over traditional designs including superior CIP performance as well as enhanced heat transfer, solids suspension and distribution, gas dispersion, gas flow rates, and mass transfer through improved mixing. The symmetry of the three blade/three baffles combination works to cancel the radial stresses that are normally incurred by the agitator shaft. The exclusive baffle composition also significantly reduces a vortex from forming during high speed mixing, which in turn minimizes splashing.

OptiMix Reactor

Early last year De Dietrich Process Systems sold the 100th OptiMix unit and the demand has continued to grow. It is quickly becoming the new standard for anyone that has implemented this technology into their facility. An overwhelming majority of customers who have installed an OptiMix reactor into their production line have future plans to purchase additional units and/or retrofit their existing reactors with the OptiMix design during reglassing. OptiMix accommodates 20 to 10,000 gallon vessels, with larger sizes available on a custom basis.

OptiMix has the field experience to back up its theoretical benefits. The technology has been put to the test over the past four years in a variety of applications, mostly in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. It has been incorporated at every process level - R&D, kilo-labs, pilot plants, and production facilities. The best way to measure its success is through the feedback we've received from customers:

  • A pharmaceutical company replaced two conventional glass-lined units with OptiMix reactors and cut their mixing time down by one third. This significantly shortened their batch time and increased product yield to record amounts.
  • Another pharmaceutical company found that OptiMix eliminated any splashing that normally occurred on the top of their reactor. The absence of dried product on the reactor walls dramatically improved cleaning and validation, consequently reducing downtime between batches.
  • A customer in the chemical industry reported that OptiMix solved their ongoing problem of inadequate suspension of a solid reactant in their mixture.
  • Additional feedback indicated the sidewall construction of the baffles eliminated the scarcity of injection nozzles, "freeing up" more top head nozzles for process use.

Does your application require borosilicate glass reactors? OptiMix technology offers the same benefits for QVF reactors.
