A complete teaching system with comprehensive experiments, data analysis, tutor's and student manuals if desired, and all instruments and controllers.

  • Compares column flooding, loading and pressure drop characteristics of three packings
  • Compares absorption characteristics of packed columns
  • Allows humidification and stripping to be studied
  • Custom designed for the technician/undergraduate teaching
  • Complete visual monitoring of the process
  • Easily operated and used
  • No further development work necessary
  • Suitable for project or research work

Specification

A QVF absorption teaching system module comprising three 80mm diameter borosilicate glass columns, 1500mm long, filled with 7 and 10mm glass raschig rings and 7mm ceramic saddles respectively. Designed to study the dynamics of packed columns, the absorption of dilute mixture, humidification and

stripping. Supplied with a differential pressure manometer, air and gas flow meters, water recirculation pump, interconnecting pipework all manufactured in borosilicate glass, valves, controllers, instrumentation and supporting structure. Complete with an installation and maintenance manual and tool kit.

Experimental Capabilities

  • Influence of liquid and gas rates on column pressure drop
  • Influence of packing size and type on column pressure drop
  • Column flooding and loading
  • Influence of packing size and type on absorption efficiency
  • Influence of liquid and gas rates on absorption efficiency
  • Height of transfer units for absorption
  • Humidification and stripping

The air/water system is used for dynamic testing. SO2, is used for the absorption experiments. Other chemical systems may also be investigated.

The experiments are also designed to provide training in chemical process equipment operation.

Optional Manuals

The equipment can be supplied with the following manuals:

Tutor's manual: The basis of a lecture course on absorption and packed column dynamics theory and practice. Also including operating instructions, experiments, typical results and answers to student questions.

Student manuals provide the basics of absorption and packed column dynamics theory and practice with plant operating instructions.

Experiment booklets provide step-by-step instructions for performing the experiments, data to be recorded and questions to be answered.

Additional copies of the student manuals and experiment booklets can be reordered.

Description

The packed columns are arranged to operate individually. Solute gas and/or air enters at the base of the selected column, their flowrates being determined by variable area flowmeters. Water to the top of the column is similarly metered and falls through the packing where it is contacted with the rising gas.

By means of a water filled manometer and a multiport selection valve, the differential pressure across the column is determined.

When column dynamics are being studied, water is continuously circulated by means of the recirculation pump and compressed air is blown through the column. (An optional compressor is available for laboratories without a compressed air supply.)

For absorption studies, fresh tap water is used which after contacting with a lean gas mixture, flows to drain. A sample point on the water outlet side allows samples to be taken for analysis and determination of absorption efficiency.

Fresh water and air is also required for humidification studies and for stripping, the fresh water is replaced by the product under test.

Plant operation is controlled from a free-standing control panel fitted with a mimic diagram housing flow controllers, temperature and pressure indicators and services controllers.

All major process items and pipework are manufactured from QVF borosilicate glass with other contact parts in PTFE, stainless steel and ceramic.
