Solid/Liquid Extractor Diagram

A complete teaching system with comprehensive experiments, data analysis, tutor's and student manuals if desired, and all instruments and controllers.

  • Batch or continuous operation
  • Solvent extraction/leaching operations can be studied
  • Custom designed for technician/undergraduate teaching
  • Complete visual monitoring of the process
  • Easily operated and used
  • No further development work necessary
  • Suitable for project or research work

Specification

A QVF solid/liquid extraction teaching system module comprising a 5 liter nominal capacity extraction chamber, 20 liter solvent recovery boiler, 80mm diameter jacketed column, solvent condenser and cooler all manufactured from borosilicate glass. Batch or continuous operation with controllable solvent flow rate and flow direction through the solids' bed. Supplied with all valves, controllers, instrumentation, service lines and supporting structure. Complete with an installation and maintenance manual and tool kit.

Experimental Capabilities

  • The effect of solvent flow rate on the extraction rate
  • Determination of extraction efficiency
  • The effect of solvent flow direction on the extraction rate
  • Determination of the number of theoretical stages using triangle diagrams
  • Mass balances

The experiments use the extraction of palm oil from palm kernels with perchloroethylene. Other systems can also be investigated.

The experiments are also designed to provide training in chemical plant control and operation.

Optional Manuals

The equipment can be supplied with the following manuals:

Tutor's manual: The basis of a lecture course on extraction theory and practice. Also including operating instructions, experiments, typical results and answers to student questions.

Student manuals provide the basics of extraction theory and practice with plant operating instructions.

Experiment booklets provide step-by-step instructions for performing the experiments, data to be recorded and questions to be answered.

Additional copies of the student manuals and experiment booklets can be reordered.

Description

The plant is fitted with an external steam or electrically heated thermosyphon reboiler. Pure solvent vapor generated in the boiler rises through the jacketed column and is condensed in a vertical water-cooled condenser. Liquid solvent passes through a solvent cooler which controls the solvent temperature - a flow rate indicator and into the extraction chamber. The solvent is directed either upward through the solid bed or downward through a sparge ring. The extract solution passes into the reboiler where pure solvent is regenerated.

Samples of extract solution and reboiler contents can be taken and their compositions determined by density measurement.

Plant operation is controlled from a free-standing control panel fitted with a mimic diagram, flow controllers, temperature and pressure indicators and services controllers.

All major process items and pipework are manufactured from QVF borosilicate glass with other contact parts in Nylon, PTFE and stainless steel.
